    Voters decide key US races testing Trump influence and state control

    RICHMOND, Virginia, Nov. 4: Voters in three American jurisdictions are casting ballots Tuesday in what is shaping up as a significant electoral test for the Republican Party under Donald Trump and the Democrats’ response early in his second term. In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the State of New Jersey and the State of California, contests range from gubernatorial races to a redistricting referendum. In Virginia, the race for governor features Republican Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle‑Sears against Democrat former Representative Abigail Spanberger, both vying to become the state’s first female governor. Should Earle-Sears win, she would also become the first Black woman to be elected governor of any U.S. state. Voters are also choosing a lieutenant governor, attorney general and the full 100-member House of Delegates.

    US voters head to polls in three key states shaping next political landscape.

    In New Jersey, voters will select a successor to the term-limited Democratic Governor Phil Murphy. Democratic U.S. Representative Mikie Sherrill faces Republican former state assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli, who is endorsed by Trump. Historically a Democratic-leaning state, New Jersey has shown signs of increased competitiveness in recent statewide contests. In California, a single statewide ballot measure Proposition 50 asks voters whether to give the Democratic-controlled state legislature the authority to redraw congressional districts that are currently mapped by an independent commission. Supporters say the change would improve Democratic representation in the U.S. House; critics call it a return to partisan map-making.

    Early state contests draw national political attention

    National political observers note that all three contests carry implications beyond the individual states. In Virginia and New Jersey, the governor’s races are the only statewide elections scheduled this year, a timing that can offer insight into voter sentiment with one full year to go before the 2026 mid-term elections. In California, the redistricting question has potential to reshape U.S. House representation and influence congressional balance for years. Campaigns in these states have seen heavy involvement from national figures and aligned organisations. Trump has directly endorsed Ciattarelli in New Jersey and remains a high-profile influence in GOP contests. In California, then-President Barack Obama publicly backed Proposition 50 in advocating for expanded Democratic control of district maps.

    National attention turns to evening results and margins

    Turnout patterns, early returns and margins will be closely watched by both parties as indicators of electoral trends. In Virginia, the Democrats hold a narrow majority in the House of Delegates and the lieutenant governor race includes historic first-time possibilities for both parties’ candidates. In New Jersey, the gubernatorial contest has become among the most expensive in state history. In California, voters are deciding a structural map change that could affect up to five congressional seats. Polls have shown tight dynamics in New Jersey and Virginia although the margins and undecided voters vary by region. In California, the redistricting measure has drawn comment from both parties and raised questions about the future of map-drawing in other states.

    Election officials in all three states expect returns after polls close in the evening local time and projections later Tuesday night or early Wednesday. With outcomes likely arriving after dark-east time, the results may provide early signals about party performance in major races and structural contests ahead of 2026.
