Telecom system launched in India blocks 13.5 million scam calls

MENA Newswire News Desk: India has taken a significant step in the fight against cyber fraud with the launch of the “International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System.” This new system is designed to protect phone users from the rising threat of cybercrime, specifically targeting fraudulent international calls that masquerade as local numbers. Within the first 24 hours of its launch, the system successfully identified and blocked 13.5 million spoofed calls, according to Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia.

Telecom system launched in India blocks 13.5 million scam calls

At the official launch event, Scindia emphasized the importance of this initiative as part of the country’s broader efforts to enhance digital security. “This is another milestone in the efforts of the Department of Telecommunications towards building a safe digital space and protecting citizens from cybercrimes,” he stated. Cybercriminals have increasingly used international calls disguised as Indian mobile numbers to carry out financial scams, often impersonating law enforcement officials to intimidate and deceive unsuspecting victims.

These fraudulent activities have caused widespread concern among the public and law enforcement agencies. The newly implemented system aims to address this issue by intercepting and blocking spoofed calls before they reach Indian telecom subscribers. The Department of Telecommunications has been working closely with various stakeholders to develop a robust system capable of identifying these spoofed calls in real time. “With this system in place, Indian phone users can expect a significant reduction in the number of spoofed calls, as the authorities will be able to stop them before they cause harm,” the Department said in a statement.

The technology behind this system relies on sophisticated algorithms that detect and flag suspicious call patterns, especially those originating from overseas but presenting as local calls. Once identified, these calls are immediately blocked, preventing any potential fraudulent activity. This is a critical move for India, where cybercrime has been steadily increasing, affecting both individuals and businesses across the country.

This initiative is part of India’s broader digital infrastructure efforts, which include the development of secure networks and platforms to safeguard citizens from cyber threats. The launch of the International Incoming Spoofed Calls Prevention System is expected to bolster confidence in the nation’s telecommunications system, further positioning India as a leader in the fight against digital fraud.

With increasing reliance on digital communication, the government has been focusing on enhancing cybersecurity measures to ensure a safe and secure environment for all users. This new system is seen as a proactive measure to prevent financial losses and protect the integrity of India’s telecom sector.
